November 05, 2015- Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is the free antimalware solution from Microsoft for computers running Windows 7 or Vista. It is considered by most third-party developers and testers to be a “baseline” between AV products, and Microsoft has never claimed otherwise.
Installation and interface App
MSE installation is quick and easy. His only requirement is that no other antivirus applications on the PC, as they are more likely to collide and cause stability problems of Windows. Just before completing the installation, the tool offers to run an initial scan to assess the current security status of the PC as soon as the latest virus definitions are obtained.
As regards the interface, MSE still separates the areas for exploration updates of virus and spyware definition, history and values. The overall look is comfortable and well organized, so inexperienced users should not experience any problems in navigating it.
Ways and scan settings
There are three scanning modes available: “Quick” checks only in the important areas of the system and program files and the Windows directory, “Full” runs a full check on the computer, whereas “Custom” allows users to select drives and directories to look at exact for malware (also possible via the contextual exploration). Work fast and complete detection can be scheduled to run on a regular basis.
When it comes to changing the scan settings, users can set the default for threat detections, depending on the alert level (low, medium, high, very strong) shares. The module real-time protection can be disabled while custom files, folders, file types, and processes can be excluded. Other options focus on analysis files, removable drives, system restore points and quarantined files. Furthermore, it is possible to inspect and maintain or remove the quarantined files.
Evaluation and conclusion
MSE has a very good relationship and virus detection generally uses low CPU and RAM. However, it is quite slow compared to the speed of scanning, while software notifications can not be disabled or controlled. Although Microsoft Security Essentials is not among the most powerful av products out there, which serves as a good tool implementation for casual users. Upgrading to a more powerful tool is a necessary step to take, however, sooner or later.
